Every now and then, we find ourselves missing Black IPA, or Cascadian Dark Ale – a criminally scarce beer style these days. Fortunately, this particular kind of nostalgia is relatively easy for a brewery to cure: a little thinking, some time at the brewhouse, and voilà, there is a Black IPA in the tank and the craving is gone for a while. This time we turned to Podzim, our annual autumn beer that changes every year but is always on the darker and stronger side. So why not make it a Black IPA – and why not make it a Double? The body is rich enough to support a beer of this strength, yet lean enough to keep it unmistakably an IPA. HBC 638, El Dorado, and Columbus Cryo combine classic resinous and citrus notes with a more modern fruitiness of pineapple, mango, and melon. Equally suitable for quenching your thirst at a lively party or chasing away the autumn blues during some introverted late-night contemplation.
